WINNER WEDNESDAY: On the Farm with Mrs. Wishy Washy

Oh, Mrs. Wishy-Washy...how we love Mrs. Wishy-Washy!  Do your students love this lady as much as ours do?  Our students beg to read more of Mrs. Wishy-Washy- or even, to re-read her stories!

To accompany these stories, we created a Reading mini-unit with Mrs. Wishy-Washy and her farm friends.  We are excited to be giving away this unit and look forward to using it next week with our own students.

This mini-unit would work well for your students at the beginning of the year.  The skills included are: beginning sounds, color words, sight words, handwriting, and simple text.

Students use their knowledge of beginning sounds to "code" the mystery sight words.  There is a resource included to help those students who are not proficient with beginning sounds.

Students pull one of Mrs. Wishy-Washy's friends and search for miniature pictures.  Once students have found the pictures, they are to determine the beginning sound of that picture and work locate it on their recording sheet.  Aren't these magnifiers adorable?  Our kiddos LOVE getting to use such a cool tool in centers.

This is another class favorite.  Reflecting images into a mirror keeps students engaged and interested.  At this activity, students reflect the sight word and record the image on their recording sheet.

This activity can be used in a variety of ways.  Here, we had students read the sentences with their partner, then practice writing the sentences, using the pocket chart as their resource.  Our kinders need practice with handwriting and writing complete sentences, so this is a win-win activity for us!

Who doesn't love when Mrs. Wishy-Washy makes all the animals take a bath?  Throughout this activity, students work to determine what color paint Mrs. Wishy-Washy had to wash off of the animals.  Students are able to use a multitude of skills to complete this activity.

Our kinders are all about emergent readers.  One of their favorite things each week is getting to add a new reader to their Reading Briefcases.  This mini-unit includes an easy reader for extra practice.

If you aren't our lucky winner, but would still like to take a peek at this mini unit, click the image below.

WINNER WEDNESDAY: It's a Zoo Around Here

Winner, Winner- Chicken Dinner!
We are linking back up with A Dab of Glue Will Do for another Winner Wednesday!!!!!
This month, we are giving away our Zoo unit: It's a Zoo Around Here.
This is not really a "beginning of the year" pack.  But, it is a great resource to keep in your back pocket until second semester when your Kinders have a good grasp on all letters and sounds.
This unit is packed with activities to reinforce blending CVC words, reading using blends and digraphs, place value, addition, subtraction, and LOTS of sight words!
Our kiddos love to "Roll and Read."  This is such great practice for fluently blending CVC words.
There are a variety of different activities to practice High Frequency Words. With these cards, the opportunities for center ideas are endless!  We love the dollar store trays, and our kids do, too!  So building sight words seemed like a no brainer to us!
Kids never seem to tire of magnifying glasses! This is a year long favorite for our classes.  Here, students pull an animal card and magnify the sight word!
I'm not Lion... our kids LOVED this center!  There is something about a missing letter that makes the challenge fun.  They feel so successful at "spelling" CVC words.

Place value is something we never thought our Kinders would be able to master.  Boy, were we wrong!  They ate it up!  They amazed us with how quickly they began to understand the concept of composing and decomposing double digit numbers.

Enter below to win It's a Zoo Around Here!

This contest runs for TODAY only! Winner will be announced tomorrow!

Congrats, Becka Lisa!  We've emailed you the unit!  Thank you to everyone who entered!

WINNER WEDNESDAY: Kitty's Colorful Centers

Winner, winner, chicken dinner!!!
Welcome to the second installment of Winner Wednesday!
We are linking up with A Dab of Glue Will Do on the first Wednesday of each month to give something fun to one lucky winner!
It could be you!
Our kiddos love, love, love Pete!!!! We are so excited to be giving this unit away!  It is full of great beginning of the year activities!

Pete loves colors, and so do we!  Early in Kindergarten, we push students to use "resources" for everything!  Here, they are able to use a color word resource to decide what color Pete's shoes should be.

We spend a great amount of time at the beginning of the year, with visual discrimination of letters. These two activities give students opportunities to practice deciphering between, and tracing letters.

Every mommy letter has a baby letter. (Ha)  Students pull a pair of Pete's sneakers and record the "baby" letter.  (We don't actually call them Mommy and Baby letters in our classrooms.  Our kids try, but we prefer Capital and Lowercase.)

One of our absolute favorite activities are mirrored letters/words.  Early in the year, we practice with letters, but will eventually transition into sight words.

Text is so vital to a Kindergarten classroom.  Our students receive an emergent reader or two each week.  They love taking ownership of these books and taking them home to read with their family.  These are seriously the highlight of each week with our Kinders! In this pack, students practice basic literacy skills such as tracking, fluency, sight words, and color words.

Sight words, sight words, sight words! (Marsha, Marsha, Marsha)
For Pete's sake, these words are SO important to emerging readers! Early in the year, we spend a lot of time practicing our sight words by spinning and tracing, rolling and tracing, pulling and tracing... a lot of tracing! You know as well as we do that Kinders need lots of letter formation practice and practice with their sight words to be successful readers and writers.

For whatever reason, this is the only Math activity we took!  I mean, we weren't preoccupied with a class of kids or anything. Haha!  This Pete unit has math activities that focus on numbers, one to one correspondence, and writing numerals.  To check out the entire pack, click below!
